  • Distinguished NW Writer -- Karen Karbo
  • Humanitarian Award -- Linda Christianson

    Choice of vegetarian (Stuffed Portobello Mushroom w/ Spinach and Orzo), beef (Beef bourguignon), or seafood (Grilled Alaskan Cod) entrees.

Roland Smith, Lifetime Achievement: A Portland native, Roland Smith has written over 30 books for children and young adults. His 20 years as a zookeeper and research biologist inform his work - his first book was a nonfiction description of his work rescuing sea otters after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Karen Karbo, Distinguished Northwest Writer: Karbo's three novels were named New York Times Notable Books. She was awarded the 2004 Oregon Book Awards Sarah Winnemucca Award for Creative Nonfiction for "The Stuff of Life," which was also a People Magazine Critics Choice.

Linda Christensen (Director, Oregon Writing Project at Lewis & Clark), Humanitarian: Ms. Christensen is a well-know advocate for literacy and social justice. She is a teacher, mentor, curriculum specialist and a member of the Rethinking Schools editorial board. She is the author of "Reading, Writing and Rising Up: Teaching about Social Justice and the Power of the Written Word," "Teaching for Joy and Justice" and numerous other publications.
