University of Oregon journalism teacher Melissa Hart, author of the memoir Gringa: A Contradictory Girlhood (Seal, 2009), will teach an eight-week course titled "How to Write and Sell Humorous Short Essays" from June 28th to August 23rd, Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in South Eugene.
This genre represents the fastest (and often most lucrative) way for freelance writers to break into a magazine or newspaper; it also offers authors the opportunity to build a platform and promote their published books.
Attendees will identify topics for two short essays, then write and submit them for discussion. Hart will guide students from crafting a rough draft to submitting a polished essay to newspaper and magazine editors, as well as radio producers, for potential publication.
Cost of the 8-week workshop is $200; enrollment limited to 10 writers. To register, please contact Melissa Hart at melissah@uoregon.edu or through her website at www.melissahart.com

Jasheway
Sat., July 31, 10-4, Lane Community College downtown, Eugene, OR, $100
Has your comedic gray matter gone missing? Are you scared of your right
brain? Have you forgotten what LOL really stands for (it's not Lets Order
Lychee)? This is the workshop for you. Over the course of six hours, we'll
tackle some of the age-old comedy writing problems, including: How can I
trust my brain to know what's funny? How can I be funnier without looking
like I'm trying? How funny could I be if there were no limits? With writing
exercises, improv work, and a few unexpected surprises, the day will be
scary, informative, and fun. You'll leave with new ideas for using your
natural sense of humor in everyday writing and new techniques for taking
your writing from amusing to ROTFLMAO.
